SEA and the Space Economy

The Great Space Opportunity

From the internet and the smartphone to artificial intelligence, the world has had era-defining innovations for the last few decades. The US$630 billion global space economy is set to triple to US$1.8 trillion by 2035. The new renaissance is in the space economy.

Both private and public sectors will soar in this new space race with all humanity set to benefit. Launch costs dropping 10-fold in the last 20 years gave rise to a flourishing commercial space movement that has reinforced global public-private cooperation. Everyone is benefitting from this boom, from the infrastructural satellite internet, and tangible products like memory foam, to early detection of wildfires, typhoons, and sea pollution by remote sensing. That downstream market value from going up to space reached US$470 billion globally in 2024 and continues to grow.

Space economy is ubiquitous and creating value far beyond rocketry and satellites today. Professional services, Information Technology and the Telecom industries will of course benefit, but supply chain and transportation, consumer goods and lifestyle, retail and even food and beverage will all ride this wave together with the whole economy set to grow 9% per annum.

Hong Kong will ascend with this space economy if we all leap on this opportunity together. As the second-largest spacetech investor globally, China plans to make Hong Kong a key international hub for aerospace technology development, so we have both the policy direction and investment to create a flourishing space economy. The time is now to dream of space, and what it can do for you through commercial space Hong Kong.

Be Space Ready!

Inspired by the late Sir David, the message here for Hong Kong is to get ready, since the new NewSpace economy has already arrived. This implies one has to find a way and a vehicle to get ready. That vehicle is SEA.

The Late Sir David Akers-Jones, GBM, KBE, CMG, JP

Founding Honourary Patron

Sir David Akers Jones (DAJ) has committed his life to the development of Hong Kong and the welfare of the poor since 1957. His achievements have been beyond just leading the Government and supporting the Governor of Hong Kong when he was Chief Secretary. Sir has been continually active in community works and has been instrumental in leading the development of Hong Kong in new towns like New Shatin, Discovery Bay, or the opening up of Hung Hom Cross Harbour Tunnel among others. He was there during the 1967 riot and found ways to bridge the many divides, including establishing the District Councils. He has started many new social enterprises such as Wuzhiqiao, Outward Bound, Invotech, the Business and Professionals Federation among many.

Governance & Advisory

SEA is governed by a Board and committees to ensure accountability, sustainability and effective oversight. Our Board meets at least four times a year to guide strategy, monitor progress and keep the Association aligned with its mission and long-term objectives. To support our Board, committees guide SEA’s activities with professionalism and specialist oversight. Our Audit Committee is specially led by a convenor who is independent of both the Board and management. This governance structure reflects SEA’s commitment to sound decision-making, transparency, governance and responsible stewardship as it advances Hong Kong’s space economy ecosystem.
